I am looking for information about my grandmother's father. Her name was Ruth Hess and she was born in 1895. She had a sister, Edna Hess, who was born 2 years later. Their mother's name was Lettie Hess, born in 1865. According to my grandsmother's obituary her father's name was Henderson Hess. I can't find that name in any records. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Jul 8,2010 - - - -   Hopfer

I am looking for any and all burials of the Hopfer name at St. Gabriel's Episcopalian Church cemetery in Benton. I am aware, already, of Frank and Clara (Notestine) Hopfer, who are buried there. I am also looking for any information on baptisms, confirmations, and marriages of the Hopfer family from that church. Thanks for any insight or help. REPLY: Burials at St. Gabriel's are included in our book Cemeteries of Northern Columbia County--click on the "Publications" bar at the website left edge and scroll down to that book, then click for an order form. OR: Click on "Research Service", print out an order form and send it in to have a volunteer look up the information.

Hi, I've come across many significant documents relating to my family. Virtually all of my family on my mother's side was from Centralia down to my great-grandfather who was Austrian. It appears I may have his travel documents. I have original documents from birth certificates, baptisms, etc. The names (variants) are Picilek and Sawchuck. A some point this year, I'm going to visit Centralia to find the graves of my great-grandfather and from what I'm told, a 2 week old sibling of my mothers. There is a dwindling population of my family and I may want to give your society, at the very least a chance to see these items and may possibly donate them as well. *** REPLY: Mr. Mace, we would be delighted to see your family-history materials. Please stop by our office in the Bloomsburg Public Library when you are in the area. If it is a time the office is not open, call ahead and someone will meet you.

I recently came across a postcard dated April 15, 1945 that may be of interest to any WWII buffs or possibly descendants of Mrs. Newton White of Bloomsburg, PA. My father fought in the second world war and during the Battle of the Bulge was taken prisoner. He was held in Nazi Germany from December 19, 1944 until April of 1945. He was reported MIA in January, 1945, but his status as a POW was not known. My grandmother received a postcard in April, 1945 from a Mrs. Newton White of Bloomsburg, R#5, Penna. Mrs. White wrote that while listening to short-wave radio on a Berlin station, she heard an announcement that Joseph T. Cam at my father's address in Boston, MA was captured and was a prisoner of war in Germany. Mrs. White further writes, "Just trying to be a good neighbor. Have a son in the army overseas." Although the last name was incomplete (My dad's name is Joseph T. Canavan), the address was accurate and my father's family received her postcard. Thought this information might be of interest to someone at the historical society. If there are any descendants of Mrs. White in your organization, I would like to express my appreciation for her efforts during WWII. I wonder how many other families she may have helped through the information she gathered by monitoring short-wave radio transmissions.

I am looking for information on John A. Powell, born 1815 and wife Mary Powell, born 1828. Petitions for citizenship filed in 1859 (Montour County) show John A Powell arriving in the USA in July of 1842. If not mistaken this would still have been Columbia County until 1849. I have included a brief history below. Thank you. As a result of several searches for my Great Grandfather, George Lincoln Powell it was determined that some of his family members Father, Mother, Brothers, and Sisters) my have lived in Danville, Pennsylvania and earlier in Columbia County (1842-1849). John A. Powell, his wife, and several children were found on an 1860 United States Census Form. It is unknown whether or not John A. Powell is the father of George Lincoln Powell, my Great Great Grandfather or not. According to the census form John Powell was born in 1815 in England. George L. was born in 1862 and the US Census form dates back to 1860. It seems that John A. Powell, his wife Mary, the four children, and George L. had fallen off the map since not one document can be found to connect John and George Powell. Searches on the children of John A Powell and Mary have turned up empty as well with the exception of the oldest child, Elizabeth Powell. The children are as follows according to the oldest to youngest. Elizabeth Powell b. 1848, ( J-possible middle initial). A search of school records revealed the name of Elizabeth Jane Powell going to school during the ages of 10, 11, and, 12. These correspond to the years of the school attendance records in which Elizabeth was found. Other siblings are as follows: Mary Powell, 1850, John Powell, 1856, and Thomas Powell, 1860, and George Lincoln Powell, b. 1862.

I am wanting to know more about the hooples of hoople's creek and what happened, i was a little girl when my mother told me a little about it. ----- REPLY --- Hi Candice, There's a key source for information about the Hooples: Elizabeth L. Hoople, "The Hooples of Hoople's Creek" (1967). The book is long out of print, but your public library may be able to obtain a loan copy by interlibrary loan. If not, we can reproduce pages from the Society's copy at our standard rate, if you let us know more specifically which branch of the family you are particularly interested in. Or, if you are interested in the story of Mary Whitmore Hoople, "The Indian Maid," that story is retold, along with stories about her four siblings, in our book "The Whitmore Saga," available for ordering on this website under "Publications."
