Following that tour, we will proceed on Rt. 54 West to Rt. 642 West (about 5 miles) until we see the Christopher Sholes sign for the Mooresburg School and Carriage House. Parking is behind the house and the tour will take approximately one hour. Donations accepted.
We will have reservations at Perkins Restaurant on Rt. 54 for about 5 p.m. For those wishing to join us, the meal is on your own. Reservations are required for those planning to attend by October 17. Please call the Society at 570-784-1600 with your reservation and any questions.

Come see this fascinating local film footage, now rendered for the first time in modern digital splendor — brighter, cleaner, and smoother than ever before (but still in beautiful black & white).
There will be a special public showing of the newly-digitized silent film “Bloomsburg Yesterday,” which was shot in 16mm film around Bloomsburg in 1939 and presented that year by the Kiwanis. Fast forward 56 years to 1995 when the Kiwanis re-discovered the film and had it transferred and released on VHS tape. That was great stuff at the time, but VHS is now all but obsolete. Fast forward a decade and now the Columbia County Historical & Genealogical Society has had the original 16mm footage digitized for eventual deposit and release on DVD.
We want and need your help in identifying the people and places shown in this old footage. We are asking senior members of the community (and/or juniors who have had knowledge passed down to them from their seniors) to come and watch the footage and tell us who you recognize and what you remember about what you see.
Is that your grandfather? your third grade teacher? Join us for refreshments (popcorn!) and a trip down memory lane.
“A Miner’s Tale”
“A Miner’s Tale,” written and performed by Robert Thomas Hughes, of Clarks Summit, highlights the story of child workers, such as the breaker boys shown, in the early 1900’s in NEPA coal mines. The story follows the typical hardships and perils of child coal mine workers, experienced by seven characters, all portrayed by Hughes. Call the Society (570-784-1600) by April 19th to make your dinner reservation, or send a check to CCHGS, 225 Market St., Box 360, Bloomsburg, PA at $15 per person.
In honor of the 100th anniversary of the First World War, Mark Fritz will give a PowerPoint presentation based on a chapter of his new book Small-Town Doctor. He will talk briefly about the war in general before turning to the perspective of Bloomsburg physician Dr. James Montgomery, Junior, who served in field hospitals on the front lines of France. Then he will discuss the home front as seen from the point of view of Dr. James Montgomery, Senior, father of the junior Dr. Montgomery. Images shown will include some of the colorful propaganda posters of the war, some of Dr. Montgomery’s receipts, and various wartime advertisements from the local newspapers. Books will be available for purchase and signing.
Dick Donald, WWII veteran, will be joined by some of his comrades to provide listeners with stories and information about their experiences in the service. They will be bringing memorabilia and artifacts to share with the audience. Come out and support our veterans!
