Hester, Pat | Junction | Northumberland | Bodymaster - hanged for Rea murder > An exerpt from articles about the death warrants and execution > in the Miner's Weekly Journal, March 29, 1878 > > PAT HESTER. > > __________ > > Immense Attendance at His Funeral. > The last act in the tragedy of Pat Hester's death had been finished. The story of the life and death of this man is known throughout this and all the nighboring (sic) counties; and it was because of the manner in which that life was spent and finally brought to an ignominious end, that the funeral yesterday was attended by an immense crowd of people. Of these some attended out of a lingering regard for the man himself and for old association's sake and some out of curiosity. The funeral took place in the morning and the interment was in the Catholic cemetery at Beaver Dale, a small place about half way between Mt. Carmel and Alaska. Rev. Father Koch, of Shamokin, officiated. > A special dispatch to the JOURNAL from Locust Gap, under the date of last evening, gives the following particulars: > "The funeral of Patrick Hester left his late residence at 11:15 o'clock this morning. It was very largely attended, and no doubt was the largest funeral ever witnessed in this section of the country, the procession being over a mile long. The remains were interred in Beaver Dale Cemetery, a small village about a mile west of Mt. Carmel. The number of people who viewed the remains this morning is estimated at between two and three thousand. The face of the corpse looked very natural, and was of a very white color. It was very neatly laid out, and on the breast of the deceased was a very handsome wreath of flowers. The Rev. Joseph Koch met the funeral at the cemetery." > A Pottsville gentleman who was present at the funeral, furnishes the following in addition to what has just been given: - The casket furnished by Thos. Waldron, was a fine specimen of the undertaker's art, and was mounted with a large and beautiful place, inscribed with the name, age and date of birth and death of Hester. High Mass was celebrated in the Locust Gap Catholic Church at 9 A. M. There were from 75 to 80 carriages in the line of procession. There was no disturbance on any kind. |

McHugh, Peter | Bloomsburg | Northumberland | the graves of HcHugh and Tully.....Well, they are supposedly side by side in unmarked graves in the large old Catholic Cemetery at Wilkes-Barre. At the time of the execution, Tully resided in Plainsville, Plains Township, Luzerne County. A large wake with thousands in attendance was held at his humble abode and his remains were then buried in this cemetery. Peter McHugh, who had no real close relatives had been unceremoniously buried in the same cemetery the day before. Undertaker Coniff of Kingston was in charge of arrangements for both. |

O'Donnell, James | Wiggans Patch | Schuylkill | AKA Friday - fugitive
My grandmother born 1899 always told us that her father eugene coyle from Mahanoy city helped "Black Friday"-James O'Donnell escape to NYC and got him a job on the City subway system where he work for the rest of his life.He is listed as a fugitive in these records. According to her the Pinkertons murdered his brother in his bed. she was the same age as his son Jamie who was her friend. to her dying day in 1992 shw was afraid to tell anyone about this for fear that the Pinkertons would find him or his family. - Joan O'Brian, [email protected] More from Joan I only know what my grandmother told me but i never doubted it. I also know that she was friendly with the O'Donnell family for years in new york city for years.Perhaps an historian could get into the nyc personnell records for nyc transit subway workers at the turn of the last century. Eugene Coyle , my great grandfather got him the job.Eugene's wife was Alice(nee Thorton) and they had 16 kids. While they raised their children(16 of them of which 13 lived to adulthood) in 111 st,nyc-they came from Mahanoy city and shipped the kids to there during the plagues in nyc.Eugene had a brother who was a doctor called "uncle doc"-Idont really know his real name-He and his mother lived in Mahanoy City-Their mother came from Ireland but we never heard about her husband.Apparently eugene's family had some money in Ireland-They were not poor immigrants although not wealthy.I read with some interest your list with the name edward coyle as the wba worker who was assinated in 1877-I wonder if he is one of Eugene's relatives. The youngest of Eugene's children was "edmund" not edward. More from Joan talked to my mother about geneology of family in Mahanoy City -found out more about connections to the mollies. My grandmother Margaret nee Coyle told me that the only fight ever remembered between her mother and father was about saving Black Friday O'Donnell from the Pinkertons. It was my great grandmother,Alice nee Thonton, that insisited upon saving Black Friday-Her husband Eugene coyle didnt want to get involved. There was quite a row in a normally peaceful marriage. My gratgrandmother prevail and my gratgrandfather got Black Friday a job in the NYC Transit system. My mother supplied information on the geneology. Alice Thorton was born in Turkey,Pa in 1856(OR 186not sure)Her mother was Alice Sherry who come from Monaghan Ireland after the potato famine and came to Tamaqua, where she had relatives. She marries Michael Thornton who was a miner who died in bed from "asthema"leaving her with five children. She had to survive by making poteem(a hard liquor)selling it out of her house for 10 cents a glass three nights a week.Eventually the Mollies came to her home and had clandestine meetings in her root celler. She eventually married Frank Boner(of Germen descent)who was a veteran of the Civil War and fought at Appomatix. One of her children was Peter Thornton who married Nell O'Donnell. No one knows if Nell was related to Black Friday or not. |

Tully, Patrick | Buck Mountain | Carbon | Hanged for the murder of Alexander Rea the graves of HcHugh and Tully.....Well, they are supposedly side by side in unmarked graves in the large old Catholic Cemetery at Wilkes-Barre. |
