The Saga of the Santarium & the Men of Questionable Ethics Who Ran It

By Mark Fritz
In the 19th century, Bloomsburg had its very own medical sanitarium, and it was known nationwide. Dr. Turner built it. Dr. Shattuck bought it and expanded it. Dr. Willits used it for his “gold cure” for alcoholism. All of these ambitious doctors took advantage of the building and then sold out and moved on. This is the story of an institution and a building and the colorful characters who made it what it was.
